Fingertips Protectors _ Three Included

Fingertip protectors (also called finger guards, cryogloves, or thermal finger cots) are strongly recommended.

1. Extreme cold of liquid nitrogen (−196 °C / −321 °F) Even brief skin contact with liquid nitrogen or with a frozen straw that has just been pulled from the tank can cause instant frostbite or cryogenic burns. The metal goblets, canisters, and the straws themselves reach the same temperature and conduct cold extremely efficiently.
2. Straw material and condensation Frozen straws are usually made of plastic (PVC or PETG). When you lift a straw out of the tank, moisture from the air instantly condenses and freezes on the straw, creating a thin layer of ice. This ice layer makes the straw extremely slippery and very cold to the touch. Bare fingers lose dexterity quickly and can stick to the straw (like a tongue on a cold metal pole).
3. Risk of straws breaking or exploding If a sealed straw has been improperly stored or has a manufacturing defect, it can trap liquid nitrogen inside. When warmed too quickly (e.g., by warm fingers), the trapped LN₂ rapidly expands and the straw can rupture or literally explode, spraying tiny plastic shards and liquid nitrogen. Fingertip protectors give you a crucial extra second or two to drop the straw safely back into the tank.
4. Prevention of thermal shock to your fingers Repeated exposure to extreme cold, even for a few seconds at a time, causes pain, numbness, and long-term nerve damage in the fingertips of technicians who sort hundreds of straws per day.
5. Hygiene and contamination control Many labs also require finger protection to avoid contaminating the straws with skin oils, sweat, or microorganisms when the outside of the straw is touched.
